INTRODUCTION
Somogy County is situated in the Southwest of Hungary and it has a territory of about 6000
square kilometres. With around 600.000 ha of agriculture land and about 20.000 employees
in the agriculture sector, Somogy is an agriculture County.

To establish the agricultural value of the land, it is essential to determine its potentiality
at reconversion to other crops to open new perspectives for a diversification of agriculture.
A detailed knowledge of the soil, the most important aspect of the agriculture activities,
is needed to develop an optimal strategy for the future development of the agriculture.
Important is also to take into account the existing nature assets and the legal aspects.
The aim of this project is to set up a Land Information System that will assist the further
development of agriculture activities in County Somogy. The system will produce thematic
suitability maps for different crops, created according to a technique used in Flanders
but adapted towards the Somogy situation.
On this website you can find a summary of the methodology and the results of the pilot cases
worked out during the SCALIS project.
